What started out of necessity has become a passion for Liapela founder Alejandra Salazar. Originally born in Colombia, South America, Alejandra graduated from the University of Javieriana as an Industrial Engineer in year 2000 and later moved to Miami where she resides full time with her husband and three daughters.
While searching for unique children’s products to fill her contemporary Miami home, she realized that it was nearly impossible to accomplish this locally so she scoured the Internet to find only a few Internet retailers that met her discerning criteria. It was in this moment that her vision began taking shape and the concept for Liapela was born.
After extensively researching the market she concluded that there was a unique opportunity to provide a service that would bridge the gap between innovative designers from around the world and contemporary urban families. She specifically focused on finding products that were earth friendly, practical and unique. The products she began choosing originated from companies that genuinely understood the needs of parents who passionately cared about the products their children used on a daily basis. And with three young children of her own, she was able to gain incredible first hand experiences with the products she’d ultimately end up providing to the public.
So in early 2007, Liapela.com was launched and within the first four months of business it was evident that there was an incredible opportunity for growth. With business volume increasing monthly, she chose to relocate from her 1,000 sq foot facility into a 6,500 sq foot warehouse located in the heart of Coral Gables. With a larger shipping and receiving warehouse she was better able to meet the demands of her clients and was also able to gain a competitive advantage over her competitors. Coincidentally her new warehouse was located a few hundred feet from the Village of Merrick Park (VMP) where she’d ultimately end up opening her first retail location in August of 2008.
The retail location has been met with astounding success and praise from its international and local cliental. Her eclectic taste and eye for quality is evident throughout all of her product selections. The name Liapela is derived using a syllable from each of her three daughter’s names.
On May 3, 2011, Liapela opened its second location in the beautiful Village of Gulfstream Park in the City of Hallandale Beach, ground level directly next to Crate & Barrel.
In October of 2012, Liapela Coral Gables relocated into a new 6,200 sf showroom located directly next to its original location. This location remains Liapela's flagship store.
